The professional Commonweal Theatre of Lanesboro, will be honored Friday with the 2017 Minnesota Nonprofit Award for Excellence by the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits and Propel Nonprofits.
The award is one of six announced by the council, including in the categories of Advocacy, Anti-racism Initiative, Innovation and Responsive Philanthropy.
The Commonweal’s award is in the category of Excellence-Small Organization, and recognizes the theater company’s “balanced, yet challenging, repertory traditionally comprised of five plays with more than 180 performances, chosen from among the world’s finest classic, contemporary, and emerging playwrights.”
“We are deeply honored to receive this award,” said Hal Cropp, executive director of the Commonweal. “This is strong validation for both our company culture as it relates to our extended family and also the unique artist-administrator model under which we function.”
The award includes a glass work by Minnesota artist Robinson Scott, a professionally produced video of the organization, and cash. The awards are to be presented at the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits annual conference in St. Paul.
The Commonweal was founded in 1989 and is based in the company’s own, purpose-designed theater building on Lanesboro’s main street.
